1,192 coral islands, 26 atolls, and the kind of silence only the ocean understands. Overwater villas, untouched reefs, sandbanks that exist only at low tide.
The Maldives isn't a country you visit — it's a place you retreat to. One island, one resort, one quiet week. We've sent couples, families and solo travellers to over 30 properties here. We know which atolls have the best house reefs, which resorts honour their Ayurveda commitments, and which seaplane transfers are worth the extra time. The ocean does the rest.
Each season has its character — here's what to expect.
Calm seas, blue skies. Perfect for diving and overwater villa stays. December to February is the most popular window.
Brief afternoon showers, fewer guests, lower rates. Diving visibility remains good. Great for honeymoons.
Plankton-rich waters bring manta rays and whale sharks to Baa Atoll's Hanifaru Bay. Once-in-a-lifetime swims.
The water never drops below 26°C. Always swimmable, always warm.
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Home to Soneva Fushi, Four Seasons Landaa Giravaru. Manta ray central. Active coral conservation projects.
The remote north. Velaa Private Island, Cheval Blanc Randheli. For those who want the furthest, quietest, most exclusive.
Whale shark hub. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island with the famous underwater restaurant. Calm seas, family-friendly resorts.
Closest to the airport (speedboat transfer, not seaplane). Great for short trips. Cocoa Island, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru.
Quieter, less developed. Joali Maldives, InterContinental Maamunagau. Strong house reefs.
A single-island atoll far south. Tiger shark diving — the only place in the world you swim with them daily.
The famous experiences
The hidden ones (only we know)
Traditional Maldivian breakfast — shredded smoked tuna, coconut, lime, chilli, with hot roshi flatbread.
Crystal-clear tuna broth with rice, chilli, onion, lime. The national dish.
Luxury resorts have 4–8 restaurants. Aman, Soneva, Velaa employ Michelin-trained chefs.
Yellowfin caught hours before dinner. Some resorts let you fish and have it prepared that evening.
Maldivian short-eats — fish cakes, samosas, banana fritters. Order with afternoon tea.
Coconut water from a husk, sambol, roshi. The Maldives runs on it.
Overwater villas with retractable roofs (stars from bed). Slide into the lagoon. Famous chocolate room and wine cellar.
Forbes 5-star. Yannick Alléno's restaurant. Football pitch. Private jets land at adjacent island.
LVMH's Maldives property. Built by 13 international architects. The most stylish resort in the country.
Yin-Yang surf wave and the most sustainable luxury resort. Ice-cream parlour included.
An example — every itinerary we plan is unique to you.
Seaplane from Malé to your chosen atoll. Settle into your overwater villa. Welcome at the dock by your butler. Quiet sunset dinner.
Sunrise yoga (optional). House reef snorkel after breakfast — biologist guide if you'd like. Long lunch. Spa over the lagoon.
Manta ray excursion (Baa Atoll), or whale shark search. Picnic lunch on a sandbank we set up in advance.
Slow day. Late breakfast in your villa. Private chef lunch. Sunset dolphin cruise on a dhoni.
Local island visit — meet Maldivian families, see authentic island life, lunch with locals. Back to the resort by 3pm.
Photography session at golden hour. Tasting menu under the stars.
Final morning in the villa. Late checkout where possible. Seaplane back. You'll already be planning the next visit.
We did Maldives for our 10th anniversary. Kishan put us at Soneva Jani — the villa with the slide and the retractable roof. We slept under the stars on night four. Our daughters loved the dolphin cruise. The seaplane was the journey of a lifetime. We're going back.
